Winter can be a fun and exciting season for kids and adults alike. From holidays to playing in the snow, winter has a lot to offer. However, winter sports and other outdoor activities can pose a risk to you and your family’s health if you do not practice the proper winter safety precautions. Many people make the mistake of jumping right into activities such as shoveling snow or snowboarding while their body is still cold. Stretching your body before participating in exercise or other types of activity can help your body warm up. 

Warm muscles are less likely to be strained or be susceptible to other types of injuries than cold muscles. So before you begin your daily activities or an especially physically demanding activity, make sure to do some exercises that will help stretch your joints and muscles such as jumping jacks or a quick walk.

#2: Drive Carefully

One of the most common causes of injuries in the winter is due to car accidents. Car accidents happen often during the winter due to dangerous weather conditions and general lack of caution. When driving on icy roads or in storms, drive slowly and make sure that your car is working properly. Increase your following distance during winter and bad weather especially to five to six seconds behind the car in font of you. Lastly, make sure that you have brakes that work properly and that you are paying attention and staying vigilant when driving.

#3: Wear The Proper Attire

Wearing the right clothing can also ensure that your muscles do not get frozen. The right attire can also help prevent injuries caused by slipping and falling and illnesses caused by the cold. If you are spending an extended period of time outside on a cold day, make sure to wear a good coati, boots and warm socks, gloves, and a hat. Wearing warm clothing and shoes that can grip the ice and snow is an important step towards protecting your health.

#4: Move Your Body

As previously stated, the cold can do a number on your body if you don’t properly stretch. Though it is important to stretch if you are going to be engaging in rigorous physical activity, that does not mean you should now avoid exercising. In the winter, it is as important as ever to get moving and get outside. More often than not, people spend their time in the winter indoors hunched over a computer or laying down on the couch. Getting sunlight is important and keeping up a regular exercise routine can ensure that that your body stays healthy and strong.
